Hi Manuel, agree with your dilemma here and we should be able to provide better guidelines for future contributors. In some sense more contributions from the community members, make the code better and engages more and better ideas.
Just a suggestion, if PR is an interest for you, feel free to post the suggestion patch to the forum and one of the existing contributors would/should be more than willing to propose PR and hopefully commit it on your behalf in the meantime.
